How to Prepare for Liposuction: 5 Key Steps

Preparing for Liposuction

Preparing for your upcoming laser liposuction surgery can significantly help your experience post-surgery. Let’s talk through five key points to ensure you have the best experience and are fully prepared!

1. Set realistic expectations.

First set your expectations appropriately. Not all healing is alike. The pain levels and time it takes to heal after laser liposuction is different for every person! You may hear from friends that they had no pain, or severe pain, or anywhere in between – do not assume your journey will be the same!

2. Prepare to take some downtime.

Be prepared to have a few days of rest to allow your body healing after surgery. We encourage you to walk around but please don’t plan any big activities.

3. Equip yourself with the tools to minimize post-op swelling.

The next thing to be prepared for post-surgery is swelling! We will provide you with a surgical garment to help reduce the discomfort of your swelling. Change takes time.

Practical things to prepare for! You will want to make a run to the local store to pick up a few items: poise pads, towels you can throw away, ibuprofen, and trash bags. You will experience drainage the first 24-48 hours after surgery – this is totally normal! The poise pads will be your band-aids. You simply swap out your poise pads from under your surgical garment as often as needed until drainage stops.

4. Have a friend or family member drive you home.

Last but not least, plan on having someone to drive you home, and stay with you for 24 hours after surgery. This is imperative to your safety and you will be very glad to have the help!

5. Stop consuming caffeine 48 hours before surgery.

In the days leading up to and the morning of surgery, be sure to stop taking any form of caffeine at least 48 hours in advance, drink a ton of fluids so you are very well hydrated, and eat a small meal before coming in the morning of surgery.
